Nakshatras: The 27 Lunar Mansions

Published 1 March 2024

The zodiac in Vedic astrology is subdivided into 27 Nakshatras, or lunar mansions, each spanning 13°20'. The Moon spends roughly one day in each nakshatra, making these segments central to understanding emotional nature, instincts, and the mind.

Each nakshatra has a ruling deity, symbol, and set of qualities. For example, Ashwini is associated with speed and healing; Rohini with beauty and growth; Ardra with storms and transformation; and Revati with abundance and completion. The nakshatra of your birth Moon strongly colours your emotional and mental makeup.

Nakshatras are used for timing (e.g., Muhurta, or electional astrology) and for deeper character analysis. The pada (quarter) of the nakshatra—each nakshatra has four padas of 3°20'—further refines the influence and can shift the rising sign or other placements in the chart.

Modern Vedic astrology often combines nakshatra analysis with house and planet positions to give a nuanced picture of personality, relationships, and life direction. Exploring your Moon nakshatra and those of key planets can add a rich layer to your understanding of your chart.
