Dasha Periods: Timing Life Events

Published 15 February 2024

Dashas are planetary time periods that form the backbone of predictive Vedic astrology. The most widely used system is the Vimshottari Dasha, which allots a total of 120 years among the nine planets (including the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu) in a fixed order.

Each planet rules for a specific number of years: Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, Ketu 7, and Venus 20. Your birth Moon nakshatra determines which dasha is active at birth and the sequence that follows for the rest of your life.

When a planet's dasha (major period) or its antardasha (sub-period) is running, the affairs of that planet and the houses it rules or occupies become highlighted. For example, the Venus dasha may bring focus on relationships, luxury, and creativity, while Saturn's period may emphasize discipline, delays, and long-term responsibilities.

Skilled astrologers use dasha analysis to time marriage, career changes, health issues, and spiritual milestones. A favourable dasha can support important decisions and actions; a difficult one may suggest caution or remedial measures. Understanding your current and upcoming dashas can offer valuable insight into life's timing and themes.
